TASK 1

Giving Advice

Prompt: Your friend has the chance to adopt a rescue dog, but their apartment has strict pet rules and they work long hours. Advise them on whether they should adopt it.

Strategy Tips

  • Acknowledge that adopting a rescue dog is a wonderful opportunity but also a serious responsibility.
  • Clearly state whether your friend should or should not adopt the dog.
  • Give 2–3 practical reasons.
  • Consider the apartment rules and the friend's work schedule.
  • Focus on the dog's well-being.
  • Acknowledge the other side before explaining your recommendation.

Band 10+ Sample Answer

I know this is a really exciting opportunity because giving a rescue dog a loving home can be incredibly rewarding. However, considering your apartment rules and long working hours, I’d recommend waiting before adopting the dog. First of all, you need to make sure your apartment actually allows dogs. Another important consideration is your work schedule because dogs need regular exercise, attention, and companionship. Instead, I’d suggest checking whether your schedule could become more flexible or arranging a reliable dog walker or pet sitter. Ultimately, waiting until your circumstances are more suitable would be the more responsible decision.
TASK 2

Personal Experience

Prompt: Talk about a time when you had to speak up for yourself or stand your ground in a difficult situation. What happened, how did you handle it, and how did it turn out?

Strategy Tips

  • Choose one specific incident.
  • Use the structure: Situation → Problem → Action → Result → Lesson.
  • Explain your feelings and what you actually said or did.
  • Remain respectful and confident rather than aggressive.
  • End with a clear lesson.

Band 10+ Sample Answer

One experience that stands out was when I had to speak up for myself during a group project at college. One of my teammates was trying to give me responsibility for most of the work, even though we had agreed to divide the tasks equally. Instead of getting angry, I decided to speak to my teammate privately. I calmly explained that I was willing to help if they were genuinely struggling, but I couldn’t take responsibility for their entire section. Fortunately, they understood my point of view. We divided the unfinished work more fairly and completed the project before the deadline. The experience taught me that standing up for yourself doesn’t necessarily mean being confrontational; you can communicate your boundaries respectfully while still cooperating.
TASK 3

Describe the Picture

Prompt: Describe the picture to someone who cannot see it.

Strategy Tips

  • Start with a general overview and identify the setting.
  • Move systematically: foreground → centre → background → left → right.
  • Mention people, actions, furniture and surroundings.
  • Use present continuous tense for actions.
  • Use location phrases such as “In the foreground,” “Towards the centre,” and “In the background.”
  • Avoid predictions and assumptions.
  • Finish with the overall atmosphere.

Band 10+ Sample Answer

This picture shows a large and impressive library where numerous students and visitors are studying, reading, and working at different tables. In the foreground, several students are sitting around wooden tables with books, notebooks, and other study materials. On the left-hand side, I can see a few students sitting near a large desk, with tall bookshelves filled with books along the walls. Towards the centre, several people are studying together at large wooden tables. On the right-hand side, there are more students seated around tables, and some appear to be working together. In the background, the library has floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and large windows allowing plenty of natural light. Overall, the library looks spacious, peaceful, and academic.
TASK 4

Make Predictions

Prompt: Look at the same picture in Task 3 again and predict what might happen next.

Strategy Tips

  • Briefly describe the current situation.
  • Give 3–4 realistic predictions based on visible clues.
  • Predict what different people may do.
  • Use “will probably,” “is likely to,” “might,” “could,” and “I expect.”
  • Avoid unrealistic or dramatic predictions.

Band 10+ Sample Answer

Based on this busy library scene, I think several things are likely to happen over the next few minutes. First of all, the students who are currently reading and taking notes will probably continue studying because they appear to be deeply focused. Some students working together may start discussing their assignments or exchanging ideas. I also expect a few people to get up and look through the bookshelves for academic resources. As time passes, some students may finish their work and leave, while others could arrive and take their places at the available tables. Overall, I think the library will remain relatively quiet and busy.
TASK 5

Comparing and Persuading

Prompt: You and your friend are both looking to buy a new water bottle for the gym. You've each picked a different option. Compare the two and convince your friend that your choice is the better buy.

Options

  • Option A – Basic Plastic Bottle ($8): Lightweight, 500ml capacity, BPA-free plastic, available in 3 colours.
  • Option B – Insulated Steel Bottle ($28): Keeps drinks cold for 24 hours, 750ml capacity, durable steel body, leak-proof lid with carry handle.

Strategy Tips

  • Clearly state your preferred option.
  • Compare price, capacity, durability and convenience.
  • Give 2–3 strong reasons.
  • Acknowledge at least one advantage of the alternative.
  • Explain why your choice provides better value for money.
  • Focus on persuading your friend, not simply describing the products.

Band 10+ Sample Answer

Personally, I’d go with the basic plastic bottle because it’s much more affordable, lightweight, and practical for a regular gym workout. The plastic bottle costs only $8, while the insulated steel bottle is $28, so we could save $20. Another advantage is that the plastic bottle is extremely lightweight and has a 500ml capacity, which should be sufficient for a typical workout. I agree that the steel bottle is more durable, has a larger capacity, and keeps drinks cold for 24 hours. However, for a regular gym session, I don’t think we need all those premium features. Considering the lower price, lightweight design, and sufficient capacity, I’d choose the basic plastic bottle.
TASK 6

Difficult Situation

Prompt: You and your coworker were both supposed to present a project to your manager tomorrow, but your coworker just told you they haven't prepared their half and are asking you to cover for them.

Choose one: Talk to your coworker and explain why you can't cover their part, or talk to your manager and ask for a short extension.

Strategy Tips

  • Choose one option and remain focused.
  • Acknowledge that your coworker may be under pressure.
  • Set a reasonable boundary without blaming them.
  • Offer a realistic alternative.
  • Be honest and professional if speaking to your manager.

Band 10+ Sample Answer

Hey, I understand that you’re under a lot of pressure because your section isn’t finished yet, but I’m afraid I can’t cover your entire part of the presentation tomorrow. I’ve already completed my section and spent quite a bit of time preparing my slides and notes. I’m definitely willing to help you, but I don’t think it would be fair or realistic for me to take over your responsibility completely. What I suggest is that you focus on finishing the most important points tonight. I can quickly review your slides afterward and help you improve anything that needs clarification. I really want us to give a strong presentation tomorrow, so let’s work together tonight to get your section into a presentable condition.
TASK 7

Express an Opinion

Prompt: Do you think children should be given a fixed amount of allowance regardless of chores, or should they have to earn it?

Strategy Tips

  • State your opinion immediately and clearly.
  • Give 2–3 well-developed reasons.
  • Focus on responsibility, work ethic and money management.
  • Include a realistic example.
  • Acknowledge the opposing viewpoint briefly.
  • End by reinforcing your main argument.

Band 10+ Sample Answer

In my opinion, children should have to earn at least part of their allowance by completing appropriate chores because this teaches them responsibility and helps them understand the value of money. First and foremost, linking allowance to chores teaches children that responsibilities come with rewards. Another benefit is that it can develop a strong work ethic because children understand that achieving something often requires effort and consistency. It can also help them develop basic financial skills by encouraging them to save part of their weekly allowance. That being said, I understand why some parents prefer a fixed allowance. However, I think tying at least some of the allowance to age-appropriate chores provides valuable long-term benefits.
TASK 8

Unusual Situation

Prompt: You found a small, antique-looking pocket watch on a hiking trail. Call the local hiking trail office and describe it in detail. Ask if anyone has reported it missing.

Strategy Tips

  • Begin naturally, as if you are making a real phone call.
  • Explain where and when you found the object.
  • Describe its size, shape, colour/material, clock face, cover, chain and condition.
  • Mention distinctive features.
  • Ask whether anyone has reported it missing.
  • Offer to bring it to the trail office.

Band 10+ Sample Answer

Hi, good afternoon! I’m calling because I found a small, antique-looking pocket watch on the hiking trail earlier today, and I thought someone might have reported it missing. I found it near a bend in the trail, roughly halfway between the main entrance and the viewpoint. It’s a small, round pocket watch with what appears to be a silver or slightly tarnished metal casing and a traditional hinged cover. The face is cream-coloured, with black numbers and dark hands. There’s also a small metal loop attached to the top, with a thin, old-fashioned chain connected to it. It looks fairly old but is surprisingly well preserved. I was wondering if anyone has contacted your office about a pocket watch matching this description. If nobody has reported it, I’d be happy to bring it to the trail office.
