Giving Advice
A friend is starting a new job next week and feels nervous about making a good first impression. Advise her on how to do well in her first week.
Sample Response
If I were in your position, I would try to make a strong first impression by being friendly, punctual and prepared. Starting a new job can feel overwhelming, but a positive attitude can make the first week much easier.
First, I would arrive a little early every day so that I have enough time to get organized. I would also introduce myself to my coworkers, listen carefully during training and ask questions whenever I am unsure about something.
For example, I would keep notes about important procedures and names so that I can remember them later. I would also offer to help with simple tasks when appropriate.
Overall, I think being professional, approachable and willing to learn will help my friend feel more confident and make a great first impression.
Personal Experience
Talk about a time when you received unexpected good news. Maybe it was about a job, a scholarship, or something else. What was the news, and how did you react?
Sample Response
One experience that I remember clearly was when I received an unexpected job offer. I had applied several weeks earlier and honestly thought that the company had already chosen someone else.
One afternoon, I received a phone call from the hiring manager telling me that they wanted to offer me the position. I was extremely surprised and very excited because I had worked hard during the interview process.
I immediately called my family and shared the news with them. Everyone was happy for me, and we celebrated together that evening.
The experience taught me not to give up too quickly. Sometimes good news can arrive when you least expect it.
Describe the Picture
Describe the picture to someone who cannot see it.
Sample Response
The picture shows a busy supermarket during what appears to be a normal shopping day. There are several aisles filled with groceries and people shopping throughout the store.
In the foreground, I can see a woman with a young girl and a shopping cart. They are standing beside shelves that are filled with cereal and other packaged food. The girl appears to be looking at the products.
In the middle of the picture, there is an employee pushing a shopping cart through one of the aisles. Other shoppers are walking around and looking at different products.
On the right side, there is a checkout counter where an employee is serving a customer. Large windows can also be seen along the right wall, making the store look bright.
Overall, the supermarket looks clean, organized and fairly busy, with customers shopping and employees helping them.
Making Predictions
Look at the same picture in Task 3 again and predict what might happen next.
Sample Response
Judging by the busy supermarket, I think the woman and her daughter will probably continue shopping and add a few more items to their cart.
The employee pushing the cart may finish restocking the shelves and then move to another aisle. At the checkout area, the customer will probably pay for the groceries and leave the store.
It is also possible that more customers will enter the supermarket, especially because the store appears bright and active. Overall, I expect the supermarket to remain busy over the next few minutes.
Comparing and Persuading
Your cousin, Jake, is moving into a new apartment and needs a mattress. He has found two options online but can't decide which one to buy. Compare the two options and choose the one you think is better.
Sample Response
I would recommend the memory foam and pillow-top mattress rather than the pocket coil and latex option. Both choices look comfortable, but I think the first option would be better for Jake.
The memory foam mattress offers pressure relief and strong motion isolation. This could be especially useful if he shares the bed with someone who moves around during the night. It also appears hypoallergenic and has a supportive design.
The pocket coil and latex mattress is breathable, cool and durable, so it could be a good choice for someone who prefers a firmer and cooler sleeping surface. However, I think the first mattress provides more comfort and pressure relief.
Overall, because Jake is moving into a new apartment and wants a comfortable mattress, I would choose the memory foam and pillow-top option.
Dealing With a Difficult Situation
Your book club, including your friend Elena, planned to read a long classic novel this month. You didn't have time to finish it and want to skip the discussion, but Elena feels you should still attend.
Choose ONE:
EITHER – Talk to Elena. Explain why you've decided to
skip this month's discussion.
OR – Talk to the group. Explain why you'll attend even
though you haven't finished the book.
Sample Response – Talking to Elena
I understand why you think I should attend the book club discussion, and I know we were all expecting to talk about the novel this month. However, I honestly did not have enough time to finish the book.
I would prefer to skip this month's discussion rather than arrive unprepared and not be able to contribute properly. I also don't want to take away from the discussion for everyone else.
However, I can read the book before the next meeting and participate fully then. If you would like, I can also join the group briefly online just to listen to the discussion.
I hope you understand that this is only because I wasn't able to finish the novel, and I would definitely like to participate next time.
Expressing an Opinion
Should companies be allowed to send employees marketing emails and calls after work hours?
Sample Response
I don't think companies should generally be allowed to send marketing emails and calls to employees after work hours, unless the employee has clearly agreed to receive them.
First, employees need time away from work to relax and spend time with their families. Constant marketing messages can make people feel as though they are still working even after their workday has ended.
For example, if an employee receives promotional calls every evening, they may become frustrated and start ignoring important communication.
Some companies may argue that after-hours messages are convenient, but I believe employees should have the choice. Companies can send marketing information during normal working hours or provide an opt-in system.
Describing an Unusual Situation
While cleaning your car, you found a small strange-looking key that doesn't match anything you own. Call your mechanic and describe it. Ask if they think it belongs to the car or something else.
Sample Response
Hi, I need your help with something unusual. While I was cleaning my car, I found a small strange-looking key that doesn't match any of the keys I normally use.
The key looks quite old and has an unusual decorative design on the top. It also appears to have a metal body with a detailed pattern around the handle. I found it inside the car while I was cleaning it.
I'm wondering whether it could belong to some part of the car, perhaps an old compartment or a lock, or whether someone may have accidentally left it there.
Could you take a look at it and tell me if you've ever seen a key like this? I'd really appreciate your advice because I don't want to throw it away if it belongs to the car.
