Prepare for All 8 CELPIP Speaking Tasks

Use these prompts to practise organizing your thoughts, developing your ideas, and speaking naturally under time pressure. Read the strategies first, then practise answering aloud without memorizing the sample responses word for word.

Task 1

Giving Advice

Practice Prompt Your classmate is feeling stressed because of several upcoming exams. Give your classmate some advice on managing exam stress.

Strategy Tips

  • Start by showing empathy and acknowledging your classmate's stress.
  • Give two or three practical suggestions rather than general advice.
  • Recommend a realistic study schedule with short breaks.
  • Mention sleep, healthy habits, and asking for help when needed.
  • Use phrases such as “If I were you,” “I would recommend,” and “You could try.”
  • Finish with encouragement and confidence in your classmate's ability.

Band 10+ Sample Answer

I completely understand why you're feeling stressed, especially when you have several exams coming up. However, I think there are a few things you can do to make the situation more manageable.

First of all, I would recommend creating a study timetable and dividing your subjects into smaller sections. Instead of trying to study everything at once, focus on one topic at a time and set a realistic goal for each session. You could also use a timer to study for around 30 to 40 minutes and then take a short break.

Secondly, make sure you're getting enough sleep and eating properly, because studying all night can actually affect your concentration. If there's a topic you find particularly difficult, don't hesitate to ask a teacher or classmate for help.

Most importantly, try not to put too much pressure on yourself. You've still got time to prepare, and with a clear plan and consistent effort, I'm sure you'll feel more confident about your exams.

Task 2

Talking About a Personal Experience

Practice Prompt Talk about a time when you missed an important event. What caused you to miss it, and what happened afterward?

Strategy Tips

  • Choose one specific event, such as a birthday, family gathering, or school function.
  • Explain when and where it happened and why the event mattered.
  • Describe the reason you missed it and how you felt.
  • Explain what happened afterward and how you responded.
  • Use past-tense verbs and connecting phrases such as “Unfortunately,” “As a result,” and “Looking back.”
  • End with a lesson you learned from the experience.

Band 10+ Sample Answer

One experience I clearly remember was missing my cousin's birthday celebration a couple of years ago. It was an important occasion because our family members had planned a get-together, and I had promised my cousin that I would be there.

Unfortunately, I had a very busy week at work and underestimated how long it would take me to finish an urgent assignment. I kept telling myself that I would leave as soon as I completed one more task, but by the time I finished, the celebration was almost over. I also had trouble finding transportation at that late hour.

I felt really disappointed because my cousin had been looking forward to seeing me. I called to apologize, explained what had happened, and arranged to visit the following weekend. Thankfully, my cousin understood, and we still managed to spend some quality time together.

That experience taught me not to take important occasions for granted. Since then, I have tried to plan my schedule more carefully and avoid making last-minute commitments that could affect my personal life.

Task 3

Describing a Picture

Practice Prompt Describe the picture to someone who cannot see it.
Illustration of people exercising in a gym, including a man lifting dumbbells, a woman running on a treadmill, and people using exercise equipment.

Strategy Tips

  • Begin with an overview: identify the setting as a busy, well-equipped gym.
  • Describe the foreground first, then move to the centre and background.
  • Mention visible people, their activities, and the equipment around them.
  • Use present continuous tense, such as “is lifting,” “are exercising,” and “is running.”
  • Use location phrases such as “In the foreground,” “Towards the centre,” and “In the background.”
  • Only describe what you can reasonably see; avoid inventing details about the people.

Band 10+ Sample Answer

This picture shows a spacious and busy gym where several people are exercising and trying to stay fit. The gym appears to be well equipped, with large windows, different workout machines, and motivational signs on the walls.

In the foreground, on the left-hand side, a muscular man wearing a green sleeveless shirt is lifting a dumbbell. He seems focused on his workout, and there are additional weights near him. Towards the centre, a woman wearing a pink athletic outfit is running on a treadmill. She has her hair tied back and appears to be enjoying her exercise session.

On the right-hand side, an older man is standing near another exercise machine, possibly adjusting or using the equipment. A water bottle and a towel can also be seen nearby. In the background, several other people are working out on machines or lifting weights. The gym has tall arched windows that allow natural light to enter, and there are colourful fitness-related signs on the walls.

Overall, the gym looks active, clean, and motivating. Everyone seems to be engaged in a different form of exercise, creating an energetic atmosphere.

Task 4

Making Predictions

Practice Prompt Look at the same picture in Task 3 again and predict what might happen next.

Strategy Tips

  • Refer briefly to the current gym activities before making predictions.
  • Make three or four realistic predictions based on visible clues.
  • Use future-oriented expressions such as “will probably,” “might,” “is likely to,” and “I expect.”
  • Predict what different people may do, rather than repeating the picture description.
  • Include a short concluding sentence about what is likely to happen overall.

Band 10+ Sample Answer

Looking at this picture, I think several things are likely to happen in the gym over the next few minutes. First of all, the woman running on the treadmill will probably continue exercising for a little longer before slowing down and taking a break. She might then have some water and move on to another workout.

The man lifting dumbbells in the foreground is likely to finish his current set and either increase the weight or switch to a different exercise. Meanwhile, the older man on the right may continue using the machine and adjust it to make himself more comfortable.

I also expect the people exercising in the background to continue their routines. Some of them might move to other equipment once their sets are complete, while others may take short breaks between exercises. As the gym gets busier, people will probably need to share certain machines and wait for their turns.

Overall, I believe the gym will remain active, with everyone continuing to work towards their fitness goals.

Task 5

Comparing and Persuading

Practice Prompt You and your friend are both looking to buy a new pair of sneakers. You've each picked a different option. Compare the two and convince your friend that your choice is the better buy.

Option A: Casual Canvas Sneakers

$25

Lightweight, simple lace-up design, available in four colours.

Option B: Running Sneakers

$85

Extra-cushioned sole for comfort and support, with breathable mesh material.

Strategy Tips

  • Clearly state which pair you prefer and why.
  • Compare the price, design, comfort, and intended use.
  • Give two or three convincing reasons to support your choice.
  • Acknowledge the advantages of the other pair before explaining your preference.
  • Use comparisons such as “more affordable,” “lighter,” “better suited to,” and “better value for money.”
  • Speak directly to your friend and finish with a persuasive recommendation.

Band 10+ Sample Answer

Personally, I would recommend the casual canvas sneakers because I think they offer much better value for money for everyday use. They cost only $25, whereas the running sneakers are priced at $85. That means we would save $60 by choosing the canvas pair.

Another advantage is that the canvas sneakers are lightweight and have a simple design, so they would be easy to wear when going shopping, meeting friends, or running everyday errands. They also come in four different colours, which gives us more flexibility when matching them with our clothes.

I agree that the running sneakers have better cushioning and breathable mesh, which would be useful for jogging or doing intense workouts. However, if you're mainly looking for comfortable shoes for daily activities, I don't think you need to spend that much money.

In my opinion, the canvas sneakers are the more practical choice because they're affordable, versatile, and suitable for casual occasions. I'd suggest saving the extra money for something else rather than paying a premium for features you may not use regularly.

Task 6

Dealing With a Difficult Situation

Practice Prompt You and your roommate agreed to host a small get-together this weekend, but your roommate has just told you they invited twice as many people as originally planned. You don't think your apartment can handle it.

Choose ONE option:
Option A: Talk to your roommate, explain your concerns, and suggest scaling the guest list back.
Option B: Talk to a friend and ask if you can move the gathering to their place instead.

Strategy Tips

  • Choose one option and explain your decision clearly.
  • Acknowledge your roommate's excitement without ignoring the problem.
  • Give practical reasons, such as limited space, noise, and comfort.
  • Suggest a reasonable solution instead of simply complaining.
  • Use polite language to keep the conversation constructive.

Band 10+ Sample Answer — Option A

Hey, I wanted to talk to you about the get-together this weekend. I know you're excited about inviting more people, and it's great that everyone wants to come. However, I'm a little concerned because we originally planned to host a small gathering, and now the guest list has doubled.

First of all, I don't think our apartment has enough space for that many people. It could become uncomfortable, especially if everyone is trying to sit, eat, and socialize in the same area. I'm also worried about the noise level and the possibility of disturbing our neighbours.

Rather than cancelling the event, why don't we keep the guest list closer to what we originally agreed on? We could invite our closest friends this time and arrange another gathering later for the rest of the group. That way, everyone can enjoy themselves without making the apartment too crowded.

I really want the get-together to be successful, but I think we need to stick to a realistic plan. Let me know what you think, and hopefully we can agree on a solution that works for both of us.

Task 7

Expressing an Opinion

Practice Prompt Do you think public libraries are still necessary in the age of e-books and the internet?

Strategy Tips

  • State your opinion in the first sentence.
  • Support your view with two or three clear reasons.
  • Discuss access to books, quiet study spaces, and community resources.
  • Acknowledge that digital resources are convenient, but explain why libraries still matter.
  • Use linking phrases such as “First of all,” “Furthermore,” and “Although.”
  • Finish by reinforcing your position rather than introducing a new argument.

Band 10+ Sample Answer

In my opinion, public libraries are still very necessary, even though e-books and the internet have made information much easier to access. I believe libraries continue to provide important educational and social benefits that digital resources alone cannot replace.

First of all, not everyone has a reliable internet connection, a suitable device, or the money to purchase books and online subscriptions. Public libraries give people access to reading materials and learning resources without requiring them to spend a lot of money.

Secondly, libraries offer a quiet environment where students can concentrate, complete assignments, and prepare for examinations. This is especially helpful for people who live in crowded homes or find it difficult to study without distractions. Many libraries also provide computers, workshops, and activities that bring members of the community together.

Of course, e-books are convenient because people can download them instantly and carry many titles on one device. However, I don't think digital reading can fully replace the wider services offered by public libraries.

To sum up, I believe public libraries remain valuable because they promote equal access to knowledge, support education, and provide a welcoming place for the community.

Task 8

Describing an Unusual Situation

Practice Prompt You found an unusual, brightly coloured ceramic teapot shaped like a small animal, left behind at a café. Call the café and describe it in detail. Ask if anyone has reported it missing.

Strategy Tips

  • Begin naturally, as if you are making a real phone call.
  • Explain where and when you found the object.
  • Describe its shape, colour, material, size, and distinctive features.
  • Use descriptive words such as “brightly coloured,” “ceramic,” “rounded,” and “decorative.”
  • Ask whether anyone has reported the item missing.
  • Offer to return it to the café or leave it with a staff member.

Band 10+ Sample Answer

Hello, good afternoon. I'm calling because I found an unusual teapot at your café earlier today, and I thought someone might have accidentally left it behind.

I noticed it on a table near the seating area, shortly before I left. It's a small ceramic teapot shaped like a little animal, possibly a frog. It has a bright green body, a rounded shape, and a rather distinctive face with large eyes. The teapot also has a handle on one side, a short spout on the other, and a lid on top. It looks decorative and quite colourful compared with an ordinary teapot.

I didn't want to leave it unattended because it seems unusual and could be important to its owner. I was wondering whether anyone has contacted your café to report a missing teapot matching this description.

If someone has reported it missing, I'd be happy to help arrange its return. Otherwise, I can bring it back to the café and hand it to one of your staff members. Please let me know what would be most convenient. Thank you for your help!
